It's late on a Saturday night (well, late for me). I have been doing a lot of heavy thinking and doing lately: weddings, funerals, political issues, special services. Tonight, for just a little while, I want to have fun.
While at the retreat this afternoon, the intern mentioned to me watching the movie Apocalypse Now for an English Literature class (based, of course loosely on Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness). And mentioned the classic line: "I love the smell of napalm in the morning." So then I mentioned one of my all-time favorite movie lines, from Some Like it Hot: "Well, nobody's perfect."
While I'm on a roll, here are some good lines from classic and not-so-classic movies:
"You may now serve the nuts."
"How could this happen? I was so careful. I picked the wrong play, the wrong director, the wrong cast. Where did I go right?"
"Tell 'em, Raymond." "K-Mart sucks."
"I'll have what she's having."
"Too many notes."
"That's going to leave a mark."
"Toto, I don't think we're in Kansas any more."
"As God is my witness, I'll never go hungry again."
What are some of your all-time favorite movie lines?

I don't think Clerks counts as a classic movie, but the first thing that came to mind was "I wasn't even supposed to be here today!"
And "I'm gonna be 40!" "When? When are you going to be 40?" "SOMEDAY!" (When Harry Met Sally- also probably not a classic, but hopefully will be someday.)
the "clerks" line is great! I don't think Tommy Boy is a great movie either, but I love "That's gonna leave a mark."
oh it has to be from Pretty Woman... when she shops on Rodeo Dr... and she walks into the store that previously snubbed her and loaded with packages she says "big mistake. BIG BIG BIG mistake."
I have a lot that are "Marine" or "Military" movie quotes, like
'Someday this war is going to end.'
'Charlie don't surf!'
'There is nothing deadlier than a Marine and is Rifle.'
Then I have some favorites that are non military like,
'When I see a painting like this I get emotionally erect.'
'Greg? Is it supposed to be this soft?'
Good post, I chuckle as I write this.
I have such a bad memory for things like this...I think I need to write them down in a little notebook. But some really good one's here.
Oh, I just remembered one from "The Italian Job" (again, perhaps not a classic)"Steve, you know it was never about the money..."
wyld-I don't know your lines, but I'm sure they're good.
Mompriest, I do have that problem with remembering... and the movies don't have to be classic, just the lines...
good one!
and I just thought of another one, even though I don't know the movie: "I'm mad as **** and I'm not going to take this anymore." (from Network)
1 - Apocalypse Now
2 - Apocalypse Now
3 - Full Metal Jacket
4 - LA Story
5 - National Lampoon's Animal House
Good stuff.
Ah, who could ever forget the timeless classic, "Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn".
And so so many from the Wizard of Oz:
"Are you a good witch or a bad witch?"
"And your little dog too!"
"I don't think there's anything in that bag of yours for me"
And "Field of Dreams":
"If you build it, he will come"
"Where'd all those baseball players come from"
....Oh I could go on and on. But I won't. ;)
The basis of my blog post for yesterday was a line I quoted from my all-time favorite movie. I'll repeat it here because I think--no, make that, I KNOW--we have completely different readers :)--
"A little advice about feelings, kiddo; don't expect it always to tickle."
From "Ordinary People", 1980 Best Movie. IMHO, no truer words were ever said.
"You look so clean and pretty..."
"I say it here, it comes out there..."
Both from Broadcast News starring the very lookable-at Holly Hunter.
Holly Hunter has been in a lot of good movies.
PG -- I love field of dreams too. Favorite quote: Is this heaven? no, it's Iowa.
Kim-D -- Loved Ordinary People, but didn't remember that quote! thanks
"Who is Kaiser Souse?"
pastor david --- hmmm... kaiser souse
It ain't fittin', Miz Scarlet, it jes' ain't fittin'
I don't know nuthin' 'bout birthin' no babies.
Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn.
Play it.
I cawnt stan' 'im.
All you need to do is whistle. you know how to whistle, don't you? You put your lips together and just blow.
Gentlemen, you can't fight in here! This is the War Room!
Those are great, Mimi! I had completely forgotten about "I cawn't stand 'im."
Diane, "Singin' in the Rain" is one of my all-time favorite movies. I still laugh out loud, when I watch it.
