Sabbath Prayer

We watched the movie Fiddler on the Roof on TCM this afternoon. As I watched, I recalled my earlier post about all-time favorite movie lines. One of my favorite lines from this movie is the exchange: "Is there a proper blessing for the Tsar?" "A Proper Blessing for the Tsar? May God bless and keep the Tsar... far away from us!"

So, my question now is: do you have an all-time favorite religious or spiritual-themed movie? If so, what is it?

Hear our Sabbath prayer this evening.

Amen

Hey, you've got the youtube thing going! Nice!
I'd have to say "A River Runs Through It" for my favorite spiritual-themed movie...

I remember that line, too. It's one of my favorite movies.

The top of my list, though, would probably be Jesus Christ Superstar.

We love "Fiddler"--my second born child played the part of the one who syas the "prayer for the tsar" role!

I loved "The Mission" too.

For me it is "Les Miserables" the 10th Anniversary Musicale. Powerful images of good/evil and of finding and speaking ones truth.

There are a lot I haven't seen, and this is probably very uncool, but I really liked Jesus of Montreal.

You know I did not answer right away because I -as you know- can never follow the rules. If you say name a movie, I name 5. If you say 5, I name 17 and so forth.

I've got issues, what can I tell you?

Anyway Fiddler is high on my list for many reasons, not the least of which is how my own family was so profoundly affected by marrying out of Judaism.

And spiritually themed is a stretch of sorts, but I am sucker for The Sound of Music.

This is so hard to answer. But in a totally good way.

So I end up saying many words, as usual, but not so much...

Thanks for the vid too!

PS- due to a scheduling error here I am commenting on your blog and not hanging with Grandmere in NYC. So sad but glad to be here.

Well, I was going to say The Mission, I especially like the soundtrack. But now that I've read the others I too want to add Jesus de Montreal and Jesus Christ Superstar.

I like Fiddler but not for any spiritual reasons. I just like singing along. Well, I can sing along to most of Superstar too. It may be that I just like sining.

For good/evil struggles I like the one with the lawyer and the devil. Can't remember the name of that.

I also like Defending Your Life simply because it allows us to thing about God and Heaven in new ways.

I hope Scout had a good day. Me and Rowan are pulling for her.

Rowan and Lindy, the lawyer and the devil... I keep thinking Faust, but I bet that's not the title...

your two are good prayers!

there's a 40s British movie I'm trying to think of with David Niven in it, that I think has a good message...

"A River Runs Through It," for sure, then maybe "The Apostle" with Robert Duvall. Have you seen it? That movie is so on target for much of the religious culture in the south.

Diane M. Roth said...

actually haven't seen the Apostle, but have heard of it.

another one to rent.

Oh, I like Elmer Gantry too.

I am a little late to this party but have to get my two cents in. Fiddler(especially after I played Golde in summer theatre), Sound of Music, JC Superstar, Brother Sun Sister Moon, Lion in Winter... ok think I'll stop

You must see "The Apostle". Robert Duvall is wonderful. He's great in "Tender Mercies", too. And I love "The Mission", too.

A few weeks ago we saw "Brother sun, Sister Moon", which I adored in high school and hadn't seen since. Now it seems a bit dated (Francis the flower child), but I still enjoyed seeing it again.

"Devil's Advocate." 1997
I had to look it up.

This film resonated with me at the time as my own boss actually was Lucifer, just like in the movie.
