Any port in a storm...

Sunday brought severe weather warnings for the afternoon. Possible strong winds, hail and torrential rain, they said. However, sometime in the later afternoon, my husband said, "Hey, where's our rain?" It totally passed us by. Alas, the rain and stormy weather veered north, where, in Hugo and parts of Coon Rapids, a tornado wreaked havoc, killing a two year old and injuring others.

Saturday evening was the first thunderstorm of the thunderstorm season. We noticed the wind coming up first, the sky darkening, and then, just at bedtime, the loud cracks.

And Scout was gone.

We found her in my Husband's office, cowering under his desk. We called her to come to bed, but she stayed put. When I approached her, she flinched a little, and as I reached out to pet her, I could feel that she was trembling.

I finally convinced her to come to our bedroom for the evening. I moved her dog bed over to be closer to me, thinking that this would help.

But when she came into our room, the first thing she did was leap into bed with us -- all 58 pounds of her. My husband and I both started laughing. For the first time, I think we felt like parents comforting a two year old afraid of a storm. I, at least, imagined my girl saying, "Mom, can I sleep with you tonight?"

I do my best to comfort her.

And she returns the favor.

Oh my. Smokey sleeps with us every night, but he's only 20 pounds and I feel like he takes up so much room.

Hope you have a king-sized bed!

Yeah, my dogs are the same...our babies...especially in a storm. We no longer live in tornado alley....but now we will have a month of monsoons in July...that should be fun....

glad you all are well...so sorry about those who have been affected by the rash of tornados through out the Midwest....sigh...prayers...

Aw, Scout. Glad she got some comfort. Molly is afraid of thunder, too. (And weighs 95 pounds...)

Aw, poor Scout! During my little Trixie's last couple of years, she went deaf, and it was only during thunderstorms or at firework times that I realised there was a blessing even in that. No more trembling, terrified doggie.

As the Mom of recently near death Buddy, I admit my heart fell when I read that Scout was gone, on a line by itself. Our boy, Buddy is too feeble to sleep on the bed, and it is too high to risk a fall. My old camp sleeping bag and some cast off pillows are his nest, and as long as he is by my side of the bed, he is a happy boy. The saving grace of his being nearly deaf is that thunderphobia is gone. Not sure that this is an improvement. Prayers for safety and peace for you both.

Aw, poor Scout! Thunder is so unsettling for pets, isn't it? I'm glad she was able to receive and provide some much-needed comfort.

Aw, glad she got to sleep with you and feel better.

Isabel isn't afraid of thunder, thankfully, but our Akita, who died a few years ago, was. She would get under my husband's desk and just shake. Poor puppies.

I'll curl up with her if it will help.

You're a good mom. My kids (cats) don't like storms either. They tend to prefer being under the bed.

Poor Scout! Amie is terrified of storms, and hides in daddy's closet. We always leave the closet door open, in case there's an unexpected storm while we are at work.
