Friday Five: Island Getaway

Cathy over at RevGals says:

We snitched a bit of time on an quiet island nearby this week. It was a last minute plan, escaping with a minimal amount of preparation. One must have essentials that make it a relaxing time. Perhaps you have had this opportunity to escape, or maybe it's only been a thought to get away. However, suppose you were told to pack some essentials for a trip to get away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Describe your location, in general or specific terms and....

Boy, this is hard. I've never been on an island getaway, and would love to. But for the sake of this game, I'm going to imagine myself on the North Shore of Minnesota, because we often getaway there in the summer. This year I'm bringing my neice from Arizona, who says "we have the Grand Canyon, and you have the Mall of America."

1) What book(s) will you bring?

For sure, Children of God Go Bowling, by Shannon Olson. It's a book group book, but I also WANT to read it. Also, I might pick up one of the Poetry 180 books to take along. And of course the Bible, but only for devotional reading.

2) What music accompanies you?

My husband, playing acoustic guitar (live is always best). He always brings along Segovia, too.

3) What essentials of everyday living must you take (as in the health and beauty aids aisle variety)?

Can't live without curling iron (sadly). Other than that, I try to pare down for trips. I like best: Neutrogena Tinted Moisturizer, and the little Benetint lip and cheek stain. can't live without mascara either. Otherwise, just lotion and cleanser and shampoo.

4) What technological gadgets if any, will you take with you or do you leave it all behind?

Only cell phone and try not to use it. Really, I'd rather take the dog and hiking boots. There are some great views up there. Oh! so camera. Got to take pictures of neice in front of natural wonders.

5) What culinary delights will you partake in while there?

There's a great restaurant in Grand Marais called The Angry Trout. All food is local and organic. Also Betty's Pies in Two Harbors.

As a bonus question, what makes for a perfect day on vacation for you?

Sleeping in past 6:30, for one. And a good mix of reflection and activity. I like to see a new thing, something beautiful.
