My Mysterious Dog

This happens fairly often, according to my husband.

On evenings when I am working and he is home, Scout will continually make howling and yowling noises throughout the evening, and appear restless. He lets her out; she barks and wants back in. She comes back in; she yowls and paces and bothers him.

Basically, according to him, she makes a lot of noise and won't leave him alone. Just the other night he pointed to her and said, "I think the problem is that she doesn't like me! Because for three hours she has been pestering me, and now .... when you get home.... look!"

She was chewing contentedly on a nylabone. She looked very peaceful.

I have no idea what is going on. Does anyone else have any ideas?

Scout looks so sad there. :( He really, really misses you when you are gone. :( Poor Scout.

I think Barbara's right - she misses you. Mable used to be like that when I was away, according to Jan. She'd a have an hour or two of it, then settle down, only to repeat the performance the following day. She'd do it to me the first night Jan was away, but if Jan was away longer, she'd be OK. Subdued, but OK. She was only really happy when we were both around!

I'm going to guess it's more than missing. Does your husband do any obedience with her, anything that makes it clear to her he is above her in the chain of command? Sam gets very anxious when my husband leaves (for six to twelve weeks!), so I have to reinforce for him that I am the confident leader, and he does not need to freak out. We accomplish this with a few simple obedience tools that let him know I am in charge. If you are the perceived Alpha for Scout, she may be confused about your husband's ranking in the pack! If you think this sounds like the situation, shoot me an email and I'll suggest a few things that have worked with Sam.

I think Songbird might be on to something. Smokey misses each of us when we're gone, but he feels more nervous about Michael's absence because he's the alpha.

She misses her mommy!

Our pair definitely miss Parker more than me. When he is gone, they want to be outside just waiting for him. They stay out all day and could care less about me. But they don't care when I leave at all. I think it may be the alpha male thing. Parker is the leader to them, I'm not.

Songbird may well have nailed it. We have a neighbor though with a male pug. When she is home, he's happy. When she's away from the apartment, even if her husband's home, he lies on the windowsill looking out, pining, and waiting for his mommy. So, I don't know. Maybe it's a bit of both with Scout. Amity doesn't like being away from my husband even in the same room!

She is so pretty, and she is concerned when you are not home.

I'd bet that Scout is the alpha in your home. She needs to get the whole pack in for the night, it's her job. Thus she howls and yodels for you. She's just trying to do a good job of being the pack leader.

Help her understand that she's not in charge, and not responsible for the pack. She'll be happier and so will you and hubby.

Give her a little belly rub from me.
